Our History
Kukke Subrahmanya Matha is associated with the revered Dvaita Vedanta tradition of Sri Madhvacharya. Sri Madhvacharya initiated Sri Vishnu Theertharu into Sannyasa and entrusted him with the spiritual leadership of the Matha. The Matha preserves a sacred tradition centred on the worship of the Samputa Narasimha.
Sri Samputanarasimha Swami
The presiding deity of the Matha is Sri Samputanarasimha Swami — the fierce yet compassionate form of Lord Narasimha, the fourth avatar of Lord Vishnu. Samputanarasimha is worshipped in the Samputa (enclosed) form, symbolising the all-encompassing protection and grace of the Lord. Devotees believe that sincere prayer to Sri Samputanarasimha Swami removes all obstacles, grants fearlessness, and leads the soul towards liberation.
Lord Narasimha is especially revered in the Madhva tradition as the destroyer of evil and the protector of devotees. Sri Madhwacharya took 5 of VyasMustiSaligrams along with 144 Lakshmi Narayana Saligrams and 1 Lakshmi Narashima Saligram and put them inside this Samputa. The scripture called Samputa as Madhawacharya's "heart".It was so powerful that when Sri Aniruddha Theertharu was serving as the first pontiff of matha, then a local king Ballalraaya tried to break open it by placing it under an elephant's feet, the elephant died on spot but Samputa stayed intact. The regretful king later apologized and donated his monetary possession to matha.
Spiritual Lineage & Philosophy
The Matha follows the Dvaita Vedanta tradition established by Sri Madhvacharya (1238–1317 CE), one of the foremost philosopher-saints of India. Dvaita Vedanta holds that the individual soul (jiva) and the Supreme Lord (Vishnu/Narayana) are eternally distinct, and that liberation is attained through pure devotion (bhakti) and the grace of the Lord.
